"He saw him then and with his returning strength demanded hoarsely. “What’s the meaning of this?”
Agent Randall hauled him to his feet and informed him. “You are being taken into custody.”
“For what?”
“Suspicion of espionage… attempting to abscond.”
He rasped out. “I want to see the warrant.”
“In due time.”
Vargas took it all in with one sweeping, dismissive glare. “This isn’t an arrest. You think I don’t know the law? This is a kidnapping.”
He saw Randall glance at the men holding him. A dark shadow came down from over his head then a gag was pulled over his mouth and tightened. Enrique kicked out and twisted around to free himself from the hands holding him as they wrestled to pull a hood over his head. Blinded then, he heard cursing and grunting as they held on and forced him to the open doors of the car.
“Let him go!” The voice was loud and piercing over the muffled sounds of the struggle.
The group stopped.
The voice repeated. “Let him go!”
Vargas was still, he hadn’t heard the first command; he had heard the second, but he didn’t know from which direction the voice had come. The men exchanged looks.
Randall nodded. “Step back.” They didn’t move for a moment, then Stephens and Bosch straightened and took their hands off Enrique. As the weight of Randall’s hand lifted off his shoulder, Enrique felt a lower movement, Randall’s other arm begin to slide along his own, a surreptitious movement. Vargas tried to shove himself forward, crying through the gag to try and warn him, but the double boom of the gun came before Randall finished turning.
Agent Stevens stared at the sprawled figure of the young man, then at Randall. “What are yo...”
Randall cut him off. “He was interfering with an arrest! You saw him!” Randall turned back to Vargas, who was standing as rigid as a statue, frozen with horror and added just for his benefit. “Perfect! Shot with your own pistol!”

BOOK SIX in the Decaturs series by T.K. Naliaka ©2018-2023, All rights reserved.
"As the hours passed with nothing but a serpentine-like trail before his feet only where the ground was soft, following along a ridge to his right and extending far ahead of him, Martinez had felt growing desperation, unable to close the distance on foot. He had to make four slip-slide steps to equal one stride of a camel. It was hard hiking, some places uneven and soft, through sand interspersed by stretches of scrub bushes and scattered desiccated trees. The tracks kept to the leveler ground between an eroded dune slope and a low, rockier outcropping. Other stretches were firmer, but cast with scattered stones and boulders he had to pick around, to avoid stumbling over in the darkness. He had walked all the rest of the day with only the water he was porting and no food until the sun set, stubbornly tracking the fading traces of the camels’ passage in the sand before the wind could obliterate the evidence of it, then kept the moonlit ridge on his right, fervently hoping they had not turned away from it, with only a few pauses to drink water.
The comprehension of the inexorably rising probability of dying in that empty land became more ominously acute as the hours passed. Martinez had nothing to eat and there was literally nothing to be had to eat anywhere. If he didn’t catch up to those camels, he was a dead man… it was overtake them or die."
